Philip Vos Fellman: 30-Year Collector
Philip Vos Fellman (Shirogitsune) has been collecting for over 30 years. He was introduced to woodblock print collecting by the late Robert O. Muller, Sr. who mentored a number of Yale students and graduates (Marc Kahn has a very nice short bio of Bob Muller on his website: http://shotei.com/articles/bobmuller/bobmuller.htm).
Philip finds the varied aesthetics and the atmosphere of old Japan very appealing. Favorite artists are: Kawase Hasui, Yoshitoshi, Hiroshige and Hokusai.
Philip also studied Japanese swords and sword fittings with Cary Condell in San Francisco. He has a small hobby business on eBay (his eBay handle is Shirogitsune99).
His advice to novice collectors is simply:
Study and buy from reputable dealers.
