This late chapter of the epic tale (with a total of fifty-four chapters) centers on the love triangle between Prince Niou (son of the Akashi emperor), Kaoru, (recognized as the son of Genji but is actually the son of Genji's wife the Third Princess and an affair with Kashiwagi), and Ukifune, the daughter of a governor who had a brief affair with Genji but is later seduced by Prince Niou. Classic compositions depict Ukifune in a boat with Niou who brings her to the Islet of Oranges in a heavy snow. The Otokodate was a kind of chivalrous gang member; a cross between the dandy of nineteenth century Europe and a Robin Hood figure… an outlaw with a heart. They were hugely popular, although feared, members of Edo society and formed a great deal of the revered and essential town fire brigades.

Their popularity led to these characters being portrayed in kabuki plays and emulated by actors and other bohemians. This print is from a series of ten prints that all show the leading actors of the time dressed in this outlaw chic of neckerchief, shaved pate, and muscly tattoos. In this print we can see the actor wearing a tattooed shirt under his kimono - since actors didn't have real tattoos this was part of his costume for the role. On August 8, 1831, he was captured again, and confessed to the burglary of over 100 samurai estates and the impressive theft of over 30,000 ryō throughout his 15-year career. He was tied to a horse and paraded in public before being beheaded at the Suzugamori execution grounds. His head was then publicly displayed on a stake. He was buried at Ekō-in located in the Ryōgoku section of Tokyo. So many pilgrims have chipped away pieces of his tombstone for charms that his headstone has had to have been replaced a number of times since his death.

At the time of the arrest, Jirokichi was found to have very little money. This, combined with the public humiliation he dealt out to the daimyō, resulted in the popular legend that he gave the money to the poor, turning the petty crook into a posthumous folk hero similar to Robin Hood. The fact that he died alone, serving his wives with divorce papers just prior to arrest in order to protect them from sharing in the punishment as the law decreed, further enhanced his stature. 善悪鬼人伝

Date: 1868

Condition: Very good color. Margins as shown, not backed, some soiling.

https://www.kabuki21.com/nezumi_kozo.php

https://trc-adeac.trc.co.jp/Html/ImageView/1220415100/1220415100100020/90900120/?p=1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0095/7602/2094/files/mg0277-Kunichika-MirrorofDemonicPeople_GoodandEvil-KozoInaba-japanese-woodblock-print.jpg?v=1709947584
mg0276-kunichika-mirror-of-demonic-people-good-and-evil-jiro-saburo-tatemura-japanese-woodblock-print
Kunichika - Mirror of Demonic People, Good and Evil - Jiro Saburo Tatemura

Toyohara Kunichika

Jiro Saburo Tatemura from the series "Mirror of Demonic People, Good and Evil". In the midst of combat, you can see the explosion of a bullet behind him and he’s violently bringing his sword down on someone. 善悪鬼人鏡

Date: 1868

Publisher: Tsunoi

Condition: Fading.
