No. 425, from the series The Post Dispatch Newspaper (Yûbin hôchi shinbun).

Purportedly, the news item description of the image. On the 17th of the previous month (mid-to-late March 1875), in Hashimotochō 1-chōme, a young woman of about 20 walked along the street with a servant. She was Miyamoto Hanako, daughter of Miyamoto Tsuneemon of Kanda Suehirochō 20-banchi. She enjoyed martial arts and had already made a name for herself the previous year in the Gekikenkai, whose public shows helped former samurai and martial artists earn a living after the Meiji Restoration ended the warrior class. She wore a Ryūkyū tsumugi (Okinawan pongee) kimono with a satin obi and her hair in a Chinese-style topknot (tōjin mage). A heavily drunk man, coming from a nearby sake shop, bumped into her. He grabbed her by the chest or collar, shook her, and tried to start a fight. Hanako did not run or panic. She laughed, grabbed his arm, twisted it back, and put a chokehold on his neck with her hands. The man passed out. She then kicked him hard; he fell and could not get up. She went straight to the local police station (the 13th-ward outpost) and reported what happened. Yoshitoshi’s print shows the key moment: Hanako, in a checkered kimono with purple accents, holding down the green-clad drunkard on the ground while people nearby watch in surprise outside a traditional shop with a lattice fence. In 1875, Yoshitoshi was hired to illustrate a wide variety of news subjects in full color. These prints were added as supplements, or furoku, for subscribers. This variety of print is referred to as Newspaper Nishiki-e" (新 聞 錦 絵, shinbun nishiki-e). The publisher of the Yūbin hōchi shinbun was likely motivated by the success of his competitor, the Tokyo Daily News (Tōkyō Nichinichi Shinbun) where Yoshitoshi's rival, Yoshiiku, was employed as an artist.

Condition: Good color and impression.
