Hokusai began using the name Shunrō after entering the studio of his first master, Katsukawa Shunshō, around 1778. During this period, he primarily created yakusha-e (actor prints), focusing on kabuki theatre actors, in the narrow hosoban format.

This print was owned by the renowned art dealer Hayashi Tadamasa (note his red seal under Shunro’s signature) a Japanese print merchant in Paris who supplied much of Western Europe with Japanese prints. Tadamasa also sold to Impressionist artists such as Monet and Van Gogh.

Condition: Backing remnants.
