Created during the late Edo period, the series follows the inland Kisokaidō route connecting Edo and Kyoto, with each design pairing a famous figure from history or legend with a small landscape view of one of the road's stations.

This design depicts the swordsman Matsui Tamajirō (also called Matsui Minjirō) observing two snakes as they swim across a river, an episode drawn from legend. Behind him sits Yamauba, the mysterious mountain crone of Japanese folklore and the legendary mother of the child hero Kintarō. With her untamed hair, leaf-covered robe, and monkey companion, Yamauba adds an element of fantasy and symbolism to the scene. In the upper left corner, a small landscape inset presents the station of Matsuida, showing rice fields framed by trees and distant mountains.

Condition: Good color.
