This print depicts the historic Sakurada Gate, the southern entrance to the Imperial Palace and one of Tokyo’s most important political landmarks during the transition from the Edo to Meiji period. Shōsai Ikkei captures the imposing architecture and atmosphere of a city in transformation, where remnants of the old shogunate era coexisted with the rapid modernization shaping Japan’s new capital.
This original woodblock print by Shōsai Ikkei comes from the celebrated series Forty-Eight Famous Views of Tokyo (1871), a vivid depiction of Tokyo during the early Meiji era. Blending traditional ukiyo-e artistry with scenes of rapid modernization, Ikkei captures the evolving city through landmarks, daily life, festivals, and new Western influences that transformed Japan’s capital.
