Kunihiro - Snow
Kunihiro - Snow
Ganjôsai Kunihiro
Date: 1830's
Publisher: Tenmaya Kihei
Genre: Ukiyo-e (Osaka-style) Yakusha-e
Medium: Woodblock Print, Oban
The actor holds a fugu. Fugu can be highly toxic if not carefully prepared, but it is considered a delicacy in Japan.
Kunihiro's print, titled Setsu (snow: 雪) is one subject within a category called setsugekka (sun, moon, flowers: 雪月花), a common theme in Japanese art and literature. Aspects of the changing seasons are presented in scenes featuring snow (suggesting not only the winter season but also a prelude to rebirth). Kunihiro may have received instruction from Toyokuni Utagawa, the leading master of the Edo-based Utagawa School.
Like many ukiyo-e artists of the period, little is known about Kunihiro’s personal life. This lack of documentation is not uncommon, especially among Osaka-based printmakers, who often had smaller workshops and more limited print runs than their Edo counterparts. However, his surviving woodblock prints remain valuable historical records of kabuki theater and 19th-century popular culture.
Condition: Color faded. Backed on cardboard.
