Kobayashi Kiyochika
"Agitation" From the series “Long Live Japan: One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs” (Nihon banzai: Hyakusen hyakushō 日本万歳 百撰百笑)
Kiyochika was active in political satire and comics that focus on current affairs. Kiyochika studied Western style newspaper caricatures, especially the ones by London journalist Charles Wirgman (1832-91). He applied the new humorous looks to the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese war print series, which became very popular. It created an exaggerated and distorted image, making a mockery of the Chinese people.
