Yoshitoshi - Modern Actors of the West

Yoshitoshi Tsukioka

The Actor Bandō Hikosaburō in the Role of Kirino Toshiaki, from the rare series "Modern Actors of the West". This series pairs half-length kabuki portraits at the bottom, with scenes from the Satsuma Rebellion in the top inset. This conflict was still taking place at the time of publication. The scenes from the rebellion are drawn in Yoshitoshi's characteristic realistic style, with images of rebel samurai in the midst of battle, dodging bullets or bravely fighting the enemy. The actors are shown as some of the principal characters involved in the Satsuma Rebellion on the rebel side. These bold designs are framed in a vibrant red border.

Condition: Very good color and impression. Some minor insect damage and pinholes on border as shown. Not backed.
