Utagawa Hiroshige
One of the best designs from the series, “Famous Places in the Sixty-Odd Provinces.” This is No. 42 Izumo Province: Taisha, depiction of Hotohoto. In foreground a giant cryptomeria tree stands against a misty background, through which we can see the outline of a torii (gate), trees and two figures in the distance. In the foreground, a man and two women are taking offerings to the great shrine in Izumo, the oldest shrine in Japan in the south-east of Honshu.
Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" features sixty-nine prints, one for each of the sixty-six provinces of Japan, plus Edo and the two major islands. The series includes some of Hiroshige's most famous designs, such as his dramatic view of the whirlpools at Naruto.
