Utagawa Hiroshige
The Sumida River in Musashi Province, No. 16. The morning after the snow. In the foreground, on the right, stands the Makuchiyama Temple amongst trees, on a hill overlooking the Imado Bridge, which crosses a stream flowing into the Sumida River. Snow-covered islands out in the river, and in the distance a solitary timber-raft; red mist lying over further bank. One of the best prints in the series.
Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" features sixty-nine prints, one for each of the sixty-six provinces of Japan, plus Edo and the two major islands. The series includes some of Hiroshige's most famous designs, such as his dramatic view of the whirlpools at Naruto.
