Hiroshige II - Famous Places of Edo

Hiroshige II - Famous Places of Edo

Utagawa Hiroshige II

This landscape view of the Suruga-chô (Suruga-chô no zu) depicts the important department store in Edo. The Echigoya (now Mitsukoshi Department Store) is the most venerable and modern of all the city's large department stores. The circular pattern repeated along the shop is the trademark of the Mitsui family. The shop dealt in silk fabrics, while the shop on the right dealt in all non-silk goods. In the background, the peak of Mount Fuji appears behind a blossoming cherry tree.

Large (Oban)) size horizontal landscape series by Hiroshige II of famous places in Edo (Tokyo). Seldom seen series. Many of the scenes from this series are reminiscent of his master, Utagawa Hiroshige's, earlier prints of Edo.
