Collection: The 47 Ronin Story

The story of the 47 Ronin, also known as Chūshingura, tells of a group of samurai who became masterless after their lord, Asano Naganori, was forced to commit seppuku in 1701 for attacking a corrupt court official, Kira Yoshinaka. Bound by loyalty, the samurai secretly plotted for nearly two years before launching a carefully timed night raid to kill Kira and avenge their lord’s honor. After accomplishing their mission, they surrendered to authorities, knowing they had broken the law by taking revenge. In 1703, they were ordered to commit seppuku themselves, and they did so with dignity. Their act has since been celebrated in Japan as the ultimate example of loyalty, honor, and bushidō.
