Hasui - Yuki no Mukojima

Hasui - Yuki no Mukojima

Kawase Hasui

Yuki no Mukojima (Snow at Mukojima 雪の向嶋). A heavy snow is falling. A boatman and his passenger make their way on the river. The faint yellow light from the window adds warmth to the cold evening. Hasui's expert use of blue and grey gradations add to the depth of this monochromatic scene. The Watanabe seal on the lower left corner was in use between 1930 and 1942.

A similar print of this scene sold at Christies in 2025 for about $5,000.

Kawase Hasui (May 18, 1883 – November 7, 1957) was a Japanese artist who was one of 20th century Japan's most important and prolific printmakers. He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by yōga (Western-style painting). Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting. (from Wikipedia).
