Kakegawa: Forging the Forty-eight Rapids on the Akiba Road (Kanagawa, Akiba michi shijuhachi segoe). The scene depicts travelers crossing the river. There was a fixed fee to be carried across on porter’s backs, but it was not uncommon for the porter to stop in the middle of the river and demand more money.
From the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations (Gojûsan tsugi meisho zue), also known as the Vertical Tôkaidô. After the successful publication of the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido in 1833/34 (Hoeido edition), Ando Hiroshige made nearly twenty more series of the Tokaido Stations. This one is called the Upright Tokaido because of the use of the vertical portrait format. Among Hiroshige's Tokaido series, the Upright or Vertical Tokaido is among the better ones.
