Sakura Sogo no hanashi, or the The Story of Sakura Sogo, This story is based on a legendary Japanese farmer. The Farmers in 17th century Edo were protesting the abuse of the Hotta overlords. The mayor, Sôgo, decided to appeal to the shôgun but direct appeals were illegal in those days, he was arrested. It is widely believed that he was executed (crucified) along with his sons and also his wife in 1653. In this print Sôgo visits his family for the last time and his children cling to him and try to stop him from leaving. In one telling of the story, in order to spare his family he gives his wife divorce papers, but she refuses to accept them and choose to die with him.
