From the series One Hundred Chrysanthemums by Keika. In Japan, the kiku or chrysanthemum is honored as a beautiful symbol of longevity and perfection, and is the official crest of the emperor. This illustration captures the individual character of the flower, combining elegant and expressive lines with color ranging from delicate to vibrant. Little is known about the artist Keika Hasegawa. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Active in the final years of the 19th century, he also produced books of patterns for kimono and washi paper.
