Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Print number 50, of Oishi Kuranosuke Fujiwara no Oshio seated on a camp-stool about to hit the drum. This is from the series “Historical Biographies of the Loyal Retainers” featuring portraits of each of the famous 47 ronin, accompanied by a biographical sketch. These prints show the samurai taking part in the night attack on Lord Kira's mansion. Yoshitoshi had just designed an oban format Forty-Seven Ronin series the previous year and was following in the footsteps of Kuniyoshi who was a master of musha-e (warrior prints).
