Kogyo Tsukioka
Kogyo was a woodblock print artist, who focused on the noh theatre. Kogyo was the son of an innkeeper in the Nihonbashi district. In 1884 Kogyo became a student of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka and then studied under printmaker Gekko Ogata. These 4 prints are from his 1936 series Nōga taikan (Encyclopedia of Noh Plays). In this beautiful series Kogyo departed from plain white backgrounds and designed richly colored, dynamic figures.
