Utagawa Hiroshige

Number 56, Sanuki Province: Distant View of Mt. Zozu. “The Elephant-headed” Mountain, Zozusan. The mountain rises up in the background, clouds floating at its base, seen across a plain dotted with trees and straw-roofed huts. In the foreground a party of travellers coming up from the plain below, bushes of red camellia on either side.

Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" features sixty-nine prints, one for each of the sixty-six provinces of Japan, plus Edo and the two major islands. The series includes some of Hiroshige's most famous designs, such as his dramatic view of the whirlpools at Naruto.
