Utagawa Hiroshige
Number 5, Settsu Province: Sumiyoshi, Idemi Beach. Japan’s oldest lighthouse guides the ships in Osaka Bay to shore. According to travel guides of the time, this lighthouse was a popular tourist attraction that dated back to the 14th century. The lighthouse was constructed as an offering for the gods of Sumiyoshi Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest Shinto sites. Following a visit to the shrine, travelers could enjoy refreshments at the beachside teahouses of Idemi Beach.
