Kunichika - Restaurant Shoeiro at Shinbashi-cho

Toyohara Kunichika

One of our favorite series from Kunichika, "Thirty-six Modern Restaurants". It depicts beauties at popular Tokyo restaurants in different locations. Women are shown serving a meal, relaxing in the garden or on a verandah, or arriving or leaving a teahouse. These colorful designs are nicely detailed with handsome interior and exterior settings showing an interest in Western perspective.

In this print we see a geisha bidding goodby to customers from the door of the restaurant. A man is in the lead of the group, you can see his western-style hat. This is our favorite print of the series due to the complex perspective and expert composition.

Condition: Print color is very good. Print has been trimmed as shown.
