Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

The ronin, Maebara Isuke Urabe no Munefusa. This print depicts one of the legendary 47 rōnin, part of the series Historical Biographies of the Loyal Retainers by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Published in 1869, the series features individual portraits of each of the rōnin, complete with biographical details that bring these real-life samurai to life. Their story—an epic tale of loyalty, honor, and revenge—was a true historical event that captured the imagination of generations.

Yoshitoshi’s dynamic compositions show the rōnin in the midst of their famous night attack on Lord Kira’s mansion. Each figure is portrayed either preparing for battle, wielding weapons, or mid-attack, showcasing the drama and intensity of the moment.
