Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Musashibō Benkei Battling with Young Ushiwaka on Gojō Bridge. This print is from the series Mirror of Famous Generals of Great Japan (Dai Nihon Meishō Kagami). It captures the legendary encounter between the graceful Yoshitsune and the warrior monk Benkei on Kyoto's Gojo Bridge. Beneath a bronze-hued moon, Benkei appears to seize Yoshitsune's cloak with his naginata—but the moment is fleeting. As history tells us, the tide is about to turn.
