A print of Matsushima no Tsubone Writing a Letter from the Series: A Mirror of Beauties of the Past and Present (Kokon hime kagami) 古今 姫 鑑. Lady Matsushima sits and writes a long letter with her brush. She wears a luxurious kimono and next to her is a large vase holding plum branches. Lady Matsushima was an attendant of the shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo (1192-1219) and was in love with Asahina Yoshihide.
