An interesting newspaper insert print by the artist Yoshiiku that was published in a Tokyo newspaper in 1888. the person pictured may be kabuki actor Nakamura Fukusuke and he’s retelling a story by a famous poet/monk named Saigyo who wrote a lot about Mount Fuji. Saigyō (西行, 1118–1190) A renowned Heian-period poet-monk famous for his contemplative, wandering life and poems centered on nature, especially Mt. Fuji. This piece involves some women that Saigyo probably encountered during his travels.
