A bold design from the artist Yoshiiku - this print was published in 1865 it shows the kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV with a Kabuki Advertisement in the background that lists kabuki plays and actors.
I believe he’s in the role of the character Oniwakamaru. Oniwakamaru was a supernatural person, a demon and there were a lot of stories written about him. The actor is wearing red Kudamori makeup that is supposed to emphasize the actors expressions.
