Japanese Historical Warriors

Japanese Historical Warriors

Artist Unknown

An interesting set of 6 separate Illustrations on thin vellum. I can't tell how they have been printed or why. You'll notice the names of each person are taped on a separate piece of vellum in the top right - maybe they were preparing the prints for some publication. The characters include:

Kawano Michiari - a military commander from Ishii-go, Kume County, Iyo Province (present-day Matsuyama City , Ehime Prefecture ) in the mid- Kamakura period. He was a vassal of the Kamakura shogunate and the head of the Kawano clan. He was a commander of the Iyo navy who played an active role in the Mongol Invasions of Japan .

Taira no Tomomori - Warrior, son of Taira no Kiyomori, one of the Taira clan's chief commanders in the Genpei War; facing defeat at the Battle of Dannoura, committed suicide by jumping into the sea with an anchor tied to his feet.

Kusunoki Masatsura - was the eldest son of Kusunoki Masashige, and succeeded him as the head of the Kusunoki lineage. Along with his father and his younger brothers Masanori and Masatoki, Masatsura was a supporter of the Southern Imperial Court during Japan's Nanbokucho Wars.

Page size: 10"X 15" (6 separate pages total)
