Two Painting Brushstrokes Books
Painting Brushstrokes (Chūto Mōhitsu Gajō). Drawing Book of Brush Paintings for Secondary Grades. Starting in the late 1800s, Japan transformed from a feudal society modeled on China into an industrial nation influenced by Europe. This shift changed both how art was taught and the style artists used. Art moved from private apprenticeships to formal academic instruction, creating a need for copy books that students used to practice drawing—from simple objects like flowers to complex scenes with multiple elements and backgrounds.
These books blended European realism with Chinese idealism, a style later known as Nihonga (“Japanese painting”). Artists aimed for lifelike accuracy in shape and color while also incorporating expressive, simplified features to convey an object’s inner spirit.
Both books are hardcover bound and contain about 10 pages each of drawings.
