Kunichika - Ibaraki Retrieving Her Arm

Toyohara Kunichika

This triptych is by Kunichika from the 1890's According to the story, a beautiful woman met Watanabe no Tsuna and requested that he escort her to her destination. Suddenly transformed into a demon, she seized him by the hair, so he cut off her arm with his sword. Watanabe no Tsuna (Right: played by Ichikawa Sadanji-I), Ibaraki is played by Onoe Kikugoro -V who is flying away with his severed arm in his mouth. 

This dramatic design was featured in the popular Kunichika reference book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master." This was a popular play and there are several versions of this print with different colorations, backgrounds and other details.

Date: 1890's

Condition: Good color, triptych is joined (glued) into one piece. Backed on Edo era paper. Some stains, creases and cropped as shown.
