"One year, when Kumamoto Prefecture was in the Murasaki era, the wife of Terai Kametaro, a samurai from Nagasaki Prefecture, heard that they were recruiting soldiers with police caps, and so she went to the battlefield with her husband. She wanted to destroy the rice bowls, but she endured hardships and fought with both swords, and the Imperial Court praised her for her bravery."
This vertical format woodblock print, produced in August 1886 by the publisher Sasaki Toyokichi (佐々木豊吉), is taken from the series “Mirror of Renowned Women from Ancient and Modern Times” (古今名婦鏡), made by the artist Adachi Ginko (安達吟光).
Condition: Very good color, borders as shown, backed with Edo era paper.
