Kiyochika - Attack and Occupation of Tianzhuangtai

Kiyochika - Attack and Occupation of Tianzhuangtai

Kobayashi Kiyochika

Triptych of an evocative battle scene titled “Attack and Occupation of Tianzhuangtai". From the series: The First Sino and Japanese war. Japanese soldiers advance in the dead of winter. The Chinese soldiers can be seen in the distance. Kiyochika shows his ability to use realistic light and shading, foreshadowing his later work.

The "Japanese Occupation of Denshodai" refers to a battle during the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895, where Japanese forces defeated the Chinese army and occupied the town of Tianzhuangtai (known as Denshodai in Japanese). The event was widely documented in Japan at the time through senso-e (war prints), which served a journalistic and propaganda purpose, emphasizing Japanese military success and fostering patriotism.
