The Actor Kataoka Nizaemon VII as Kasahara Roo. This print should be a diptych with Nakamura Utaemon III as Miyamoto Musashi but we only have the left sheet.

Shunkōsai Hokushū (春好斎 北洲), who is also known as Shunkō IV, was a designer of ukiyo-e style Japanese woodblock prints in Osaka who was active from about 1802 to 1832. He may have studied with Hokusai. He was the most important artist in Osaka during the 1810s and 1820s and established the Osaka style of actor prints.

Kasahara Roo is a character from a Japanese play titled Katakiuchi nito no eiyuki. The character is an old man whom the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi encounters after getting lost in the mountains. Kasahara Roo is revealed to be the celebrated fencing master Tsukahara Bokuden.
