Hokucho - Samurai, Pheasant, and Supernatural Flames
Hokucho - Samurai, Pheasant, and Supernatural Flames
Hokucho Inoue
An actor playing a samurai, looking at a pheasant with supernatural flames above it. The pheasant is writing a message with it's claws. In Japanese folklore, pheasants were considered messengers from heaven. An expressive kabuki portrait by the rarely seen Osaka artist Hokucho. Most kamigata-e or prints from the Osaka region are in the smaller chuban size, so this is a rare full oban format design.
