Koitsu - Snow At Ukimido
Koitsu - Snow At Ukimido
Tsuchiya Koitsu
This quiet scene of Snow At Ukimido is one of Koitsu's most beautiful and sought-after, and as a result it is difficult to acquire in any edition. Watanabe Publisher, 6-mm seal.
Like Kawase, Hasui, Koitsu Tsuchiya's prints immortalize Japan's landscapes. He expertly uses effects of light and shadow. At the age of 15, he moved to Tokyo to study woodblock printing under Matsuzaki, a carver for the ukiyo-e master Kiyochika Kobayashi. He then became a student of Kiyochika. For 19 years, Koitsu lived in Kiyochika’s home, studying the art of Japanese woodblock printing. In 1931, he met the publisher Watanabe and focused on Japanese landscape prints in the Shin Hanga style.
