Yoshitoshi - Naosuke Gombei Ripping Off A face

Yoshitoshi - Naosuke Gombei Ripping Off A face

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

The most dramatic and gory print in the series. Naosuke Gombei ripping off a face. #13 in the series: 'Eimei nijūhasshūku (英名 二十八 衆句 - 28 Famous Murders with Verse)', of which Yoshitoshi produced half, with Yoshiiku being responsible for the others. It dates from early in Yoshitoshi's career, when he was about twenty-seven. The series contains illustrations of events which often have a historical background, and were usually well-known from kabuki and noh plays.

This series underscores both Yoshitoshi's fascination with battle and dark themes, and his precarious mental state that plagued him throughout his life. Yoshitoshi was no stranger to death due to his observation of actual battles and the aftermath of enemy heads left out for public viewing. This is the series that started the genre of Muzan-e (bloody prints).

Some of the blood on these prints was thickened with dark red glue to give it a realistic appearance.
