Yoshitoyo - Great Elephant

Yoshitoyo - Great Elephant

Yoshitoyo Gansuitei (Utagawa) 1830-1866

Date: 1860's
Medium:
Woodblock Print. Double Oban (20" x 14")
Publisher:
Unknown
Genre:
Ukiyo-e

A wonderful, large, print promoting a "Newly Imported Great Elephant". The print depicts a massive black elephant lifting a bunch of straw, an exotic animal brought to Japan during the Edo period for public display. It illustrates the immense fascination Japanese people had with these rare foreign creatures, which were often showcased at exhibitions in port cities like Osaka.

Yoshitoyo was an ukiyo-e printmaker during the late Edo period and the student of both Kunisada and Kuniyoshi. While Yoshitoyo lived and worked primarily in Edo, he briefly traveled in Osaka and became a member of the kamigate-e group, or Osaka school.

Condition: Cropped as shown, not backed but some backing residue. One sheet (not two). Some stains and dirt as shown.
