This original Japanese woodblock print, titled The Toyoda Restaurant: Mashiba Hisayoshi, comes from the celebrated series Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital (Tōto kōmei kaiseki zukushi), published around 1852 during the late Edo period. The collaboration pairs two masters of ukiyo-e: Utagawa Kunisada, who designed the figure, and Utagawa Hiroshige, who created the atmospheric background scenery.
The print features the famed kabuki actor Arashi Rikan III portraying Mashiba Hisayoshi, a theatrical interpretation of the legendary historical figure Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Part of a unique series blending Edo’s renowned dining establishments with kabuki culture, the artwork captures the vibrant entertainment world of 19th century Japan, where theater, fashion, travel, and cuisine intersected.
