This print depicts the famous “Looking Back Willow” at the entrance to the Shin-Yoshiwara licensed quarter, one of the most symbolic landmarks of Edo’s entertainment district. Known as the place where departing visitors would pause and glance back toward the pleasure quarters, the willow became a lasting symbol of nostalgia and longing. Shōsai Ikkei captures the atmosphere of the district with visitors, rickshaw, and the iconic tree standing at the gateway to Yoshiwara.

This original woodblock print by Shōsai Ikkei comes from the celebrated series Forty-Eight Famous Views of Tokyo (1871), a vivid depiction of Tokyo during the early Meiji era. Blending traditional ukiyo-e artistry with scenes of rapid modernization, Ikkei captures the evolving city through landmarks, daily life, festivals, and new Western influences that transformed Japan’s capital.
