This print depicts the canal-lined Honjo district from Mitsumebashi Bridge looking toward Hitotsumebashi Bridge, highlighting the waterways that once defined much of eastern Tokyo’s transportation and commerce. Shōsai Ikkei captures the rhythm of daily life along the canals, preserving the character of a rapidly changing city before modernization transformed much of the historic landscape.

This original woodblock print by Shōsai Ikkei comes from the celebrated series Forty-Eight Famous Views of Tokyo (1871), a vivid depiction of Tokyo during the early Meiji era. Blending traditional ukiyo-e artistry with scenes of rapid modernization, Ikkei captures the evolving city through landmarks, daily life, festivals, and new Western influences that transformed Japan’s capital.
