This original Japanese woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts Tamiya Botarō Munechika, the legendary young avenger from the famous tale A Child's Revenge. Having sworn to avenge the murder of his father, Botarō kneels with his sword drawn, prepared to fulfill his vow. Hovering above him is a powerful tengu, the supernatural mountain spirit renowned in Japanese folklore for its mastery of swordsmanship. Wielding a feather fan and offering guidance from above, the tengu serves as both protector and inspiration as Botarō prepares for his fateful confrontation.

Published in 1881 by Tsuda Genshichi, this design comes from Yoshitoshi's acclaimed series Twenty-Four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan, which celebrates historical and legendary figures admired for their courage, loyalty, perseverance, and virtue. Created during the height of Yoshitoshi's mature period, the series is renowned for its dramatic storytelling, psychological depth, and exceptional draftsmanship.

One of the most celebrated artists of the Meiji era, Yoshitoshi combined history, folklore, and theatrical drama to create some of the most compelling images in Japanese woodblock printmaking. His works remain highly sought after by collectors for their artistic sophistication and powerful narrative content.
