Genre: Ukiyo-e, Fūzokuga (Genre Scene)

A pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, Hokuju is best known for his refined actor prints, surimono, and genre scenes that capture the customs and daily life of early nineteenth-century Japan. In Manzai, he employs a restrained monochrome palette and elegant linework to create a charming and intimate glimpse into a beloved seasonal tradition.
