Maeda Koichi - Tea Plantation in Early Summer

Maeda Koichi - Tea Plantation in Early Summer

Maeda Koichi (1936)

Date: 1980's
Publisher: Watanabe
Size: 5 1/2" x 6 1/4"
Genre: Landscape, Shin-hanga

This woodblock print comes from a distinctive series of contemporary works published by the renowned Watanabe Publishing Company of Tokyo. Watanabe commissioned leading modern artists to create original designs, which were carved by the artists themselves and printed by Watanabe on fine handmade Torinoko paper. Rather than being sold through normal retail channels, these prints were distributed in limited numbers to select clients and collectors.

The series showcases a wide range of artistic styles and subjects, from serene landscapes and city scenes to figures and abstract compositions. Together they represent an interesting bridge between Japan's traditional woodblock printing techniques and contemporary artistic expression.

Born in Tokyo in 1936, Maeda Koichi specializes in the technique of traditional Japanese woodblock prints. His preferred subjects include landscapes and rural village scenes. Maeda Koichi excels in his adept use of color combinations, meticulous detailing, and the harmonious balance of composition and color.
