Nikko Sugi Namiki (The Avenue of Gigantic Cryptomerias, Nikko).
Eiichi Kotozuka was a Japanese painter and woodblock print artist born in Osaka in 1906. He studied at the Kyoto Specialist School of Painting and became active in Kyoto’s printmaking community. In the late 1940s, Kotozuka joined Tokuriki Tomikichirō and other Kyoto artists in establishing Kōryokusha, a cooperative publishing venture that allowed artists greater independence from the established commercial publishing houses.
Kotozuka produced a wide range of woodblock prints depicting Japanese landscapes, traditional architecture and customs, flowers, birds, and other subjects drawn from nature. His work is characterized by simplified forms, strong compositions, and a distinctly modern interpretation of traditional Japanese imagery. He was also a member of the Seiryūsha, an association of independent artists. Kotozuka continued working as an artist and printmaker until his death in 1979.
